Is it okay if I share my story with you? I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician since I was five years old. I always loved how my childhood doctor would take extra time out just to talk to me and hear about my life and interests. His example inspired me to want to someday bring positive moments such as these into the lives of children everywhere as their future doctor.

After high school, my best friend and I went on to attend medical school together and later to fulfill our childhood dream of one day working together as physicians. After finishing my pediatric residency program, I purchased my first home, traveled cross county, and had the opportunity to lead and help design a beautiful, state of the art, doctor’s office. I felt like I was on the road to achieving everything I ever wanted.

As time went on, increasing workloads, countless late-night hours spent charting in the electronic medical record, and the burden of paying off high student loan debt started to wear on me. I found myself working longer hours and weekends just to keep up and having less time for myself, my health, and my family. I started catching more colds from my patients, losing weight, and feeling tired all the time. One day at work I felt so dizzy and weak my hand started shaking while I was examining a patient. It scared me because I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew I needed to find out. I went on to spend thousands of dollars in medical bills trying to do just that but with very few answers.

Something had to change. Fast forward two months. I officially quit my job. I had no new job lined up, no plan, and no real savings! So I hired a life coach who helped me change my mindset and kept me committed to the values and goals I identified with her help. I knew that being a pediatrician was my true passion, but the things I enjoyed most about being a doctor had gotten pushed aside, and I was overwhelmed by the rapidly changing and demanding system of healthcare in the US. I missed the time I used to have for teaching students and new parents. I also missed giving back to my community through volunteering.

I eventually transitioned to a setting where I could practice medicine in a way that allowed me to connect with families and patients the way I once envisioned while maintaining a more balanced and healthy lifestyle. I later went on to attend a medical conference that helped me to further define my purpose, which is to teach parents in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way the skills they need to feel at ease and more prepared to take great care of their children. I particularly enjoy educating new and expectant parents as well as coaching families through the fundamentals of Baby Sign Language.
